Social media is not a billboard. You can’t just post to your profile, close your app and hope that people will see your content.
Holy moly, this one is going to blow your socks off!
You’re heard us say it before: Social media is not a billboard. You can’t just post to your profile, close your app and hope that people will see your content. It’s called “social” media for a reason, folks 🙂
Which means you have to be socialising, you have to be meeting people, and you have to be engaging with people if you want to see results in your business from Instagram.
So how do we do that? Woohoo, here we go!
First up, we need to find the right people for you to engage with. This is where all that work on your ideal customer is going to come in handy, right? 😉
Knowing who your ideal customer is, where she hangs out online, what he spends his time reading online is going to prove very helpful during the first step in our 3-step formula.
Let’s dive in!
1. Find your people on IG
There are two effective ways to do this. First, think about who your ideal customer is following on Instagram. Find the influencers and thought-leaders that your audience is looking to for solutions, and start reviewing the people who are commenting on their posts. These people are your people!
The second way to find your people on Instagram is using hashtags. Create a list of 5-10 hashtags that your audience might be using and start keeping an eye on those feeds.
You’re going to do this by going to the Explore section in your app, typing in the hashtag you have chosen to start with, go through the posts that have that hashtag on them and review the people publishing those posts until you find people that feel right. These are also your people!
We find hashtags for our audience or clients’ audiences using things like “smallbiz” if we’re looking for business owners, or “fitness” if we are looking for someone who might be interested in fitness training. You get the gist 🙂
2. Engage on their posts
Once you have found the right people, the next bit is easy.
Go through their feed, “like” at least 3 of their posts (and not just the first 3 – actually put some thought into it!), and comment on one post.
Make sure your comment is authentic. Find a post that resonates with you, whether it’s the photo itself or the caption, and leave a comment that is the real you, speaking from the heart.
The last and final step…
3. Send a message
This often the scariest, but the most important step in the process. You need to send this person a message in their DM’s (direct messages).
This is the equivalent to going up to the at a networking event or a conference and introducing yourself. This about what you might say in-person, and say that to them.
Tell them you love their work, or you have looking forward to meeting them, or you admire the way they show up and what they stand for. Just get on their radar and make a connection.
And if they reply, let the conversation continue. Your job is not done once you have sent that first message – keep the momentum.
So I know this sounds like a lot of work. We have timed this whole exercise and, from start to finish, you should be able to find and reach out to at least 4 people within 30 minutes. We also have a follow rate of 100% when we use this formula. That’s right – reaching out to 4 people in a day will result in 4 new followers!
So get cracking, folks. Put in the work, schedule the 30 minutes everyday, and start attracting and connecting with your ideal customers using Instagram 🙂
